The design of the Seattle Symphony gift shop at its new Benaroya Hall home was inspired by the form and construction of symphonic instruments. Working within a very limited space, the challenge was to create a visually dynamic retail experience while respecting the architecture of the Boeing Gallery and the subtlety of the illuminated art niches above. Form, color, and materials were derived from a study of various symphonic instruments, and the design sought to emulate their visual and tactile qualities, without literally representing any one. Strings in tension, tautly- bowed wood veneer, and reflective accents of mechanical fasteners are embodied by the curved, anigre ceiling panels. The integration of the concept with required programmatic elements is evident throughout, including the use of cable lighting that spans the ceiling panels across aluminum bridges. The result is a compact and efficient retail environment with a strong visual connection to the Symphony.
