This 5000 SF residence occupies a wooded hillside site overlooking the Bellevue skyline. The design reflects a desire to have the main living spaces high enough on the site to enjoy the drammatic view, while providing vehicular access and parking on the same level. A simple, shed-roofed structure folds to enclose an auto court on the uphill side and opens outward toward the downtown view. The garage, living spaces and master suite are on the main floor level while the children’s area and a guest suite occupy the floor below. The entry, stair and library occupy a separate volume that inflects toward the auto court. The shed roofs spring from a continuous stone-clad wall that retains the hillside and defines the auto court. This wall, which extends both from inside to outside and main floor to lower, provides a continuous spatial experience as one enters and moves through the house. The wall is caped with a continuous plate steel gutter through which harvested rainwater is delivered to partially buried cisterns at each end where it is stored for later irrigation use.
