Situated atop the hill in Bellevue's Sommerset neighborhood, this 1963 house has sweeping views of the Olympic Mountains, Mt. Baker, and the city-scapes of downtown Seattle and Bellevue. The original house (seen below right) was very compartmentalized and did not take advantage of its impressive site or the informal manner in which its occupants live. The remodel focused on the removal of several interior walls to create a single, open living space. The only existing structure that remains is a single post at the center of the house, which was replaced with a sculptural, tapered, maple column. A new breakfast room addition engages a small garden patio, creating a connection to an intimate exterior space in contrast to the expansive views on the North. The garage was extended to create a new master bathroom and dressing room. An existing window, previously located in the garage, now provides views from the custom, slate-tile shower and soaking tub.
