The owners of this home on Orcas Island purchased it as a partially completed shell. They engaged Adams Mohler Ghillino to design the interiors for the main living spaces and master suite. The house included a large, open volume containing the entry, living, dining, kitchen and home office. While the volume of space worked well for the couple’s extensive modern art collection, it lacked a sense of clearly defined spaces within it. In addition, lighting upgrades were required for the art. In response, fir casework was employed to define a series of spaces within the open volume. Pendant mounted track lighting was used to further define spaces while providing flexibility of lighting for art. The upper cabinets in the kitchen were designed to provide a series of illuminated niches for the couple’s collection of native north coast sculpture. A large stone fireplace was designed to provide a hearth of an appropriate scale for the space.
