This residence for an artist in the San Juan Islands sits in a natural clearing on a rocky bluff with views toward Vancouver Island. It consists of three separate structures: a main house with a bedroom and bath for the owner, a guest house with two guest rooms sharing a common entry and bath, and an art studio. The careful siting of these three structures creates a sequence of spaces. Arrival occurs at the forest edge near the studio. The procession continues through a protected entry court along the north side of the guest house and into the great room of the main house. The glazed corners of this space then invite the procession to continue beyond the site to the water and horizon beyond. Materials and colors were intentionally selected to harmonize with the natural conditions of the surrounding landscape.
