The Gaslight Inn is a venerable Seattle home built in 1906 and renovated into a bed and breakfast in 1981. The kitchen, however, was not improved in the earlier renovation. The owners requested an updated kitchen for their personal use that would also serve the needs of a busy bed and breakfast. As this kitchen is the owners' only private space within the Inn, they further requested an informal sitting area. They desired a modern kitchen in style and function yet one that would also respect the traditional wood detailing found throughout the Inn. The layout of the kitchen was driven by a need to reestablish direct kitchen access to the formal dining room and to maintain access from an adjacent private stairway. Contemporary casework and appliances are set within perimeter walls that reflect the ornate wood detailing of the Inn. Windows and doors are richly trimmed in warm Douglas Fir, and fir wainscoting wraps the sitting area.
